War In Your Heart # 32

Victory Through the Victor (continued)

A Son - a Sovereign

"Unto us a Son is given" - given to reign as the Sovereign. The Son was the pre-incarnate Son; the only begotten Son of the Father; the eternal Son of God; the Son who was the brightness of the Father's glory and the express image of His person, the well-beloved Son who came out of eternity into time; out of the bosom of His Father to be in the bosom of the virgin; out of the glory of heaven into the darkness of earth. This Son was given not only as Saviour to redeem, but as Sovereign to reign. All that had been ruined through sin must not only be redeemed through Jesus the Saviour, but must be fully restored to God through Christ the sovereign Lord.

The Son was given as the seed of the woman to bruise the serpent's head: to win a full and final victory over satan; the Saviour was to be Sovereign, sharing His Father's throne until such a time as He should sit upon the promised "throne of David."

Genesis 3:15: Her seed ... shall bruise thy head.

Isaiah 9:6, 7: The government shall be upon his shoulder ... upon the throne of David.

Luke 1:31-33: Behold, thou shalt ... bring forth a son ... He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Hebrews 1:3: When the Son of man purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.

Matthew 25:31: When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory.

Psalm 93:1: The Lord reigneth.

The Son was given to reign as sole Sovereign over the earth and over mankind.

We would thus sum up the two aspects of His Sonship - "A child born...a son given."

Son of Man - woman's seed - virgin-born begotten Son - Sovereign.

God - the Word - Deity - with God - heaven - eternity.

One Man

Man - became flesh - humanity - dwelt among us - earth - time.

"My Father" - very God - divine nature.

Emmanuel - God with us - saying: "My brethren" - very man - human nature.

H. C. G. Moule depicts the dual nature of the God-man in the following words: "He is the Son of God, the Word of the Father, begotten from everlasting of the Father, very and eternal God, of one substance with the Father. Being such, He took man's nature in the womb of the blessed Virgin, of her substance, so that two whole and perfect Natures, that is to say, the Godhead and the Manhood, were joined together in one Person, never to be divided, whereof is one Christ very God and very Man."
